Democracy needs places of togetherness: real "living rooms of society". The new taz FUTURZWEI shows how such spaces are created - and why they secure our future.

If there is a lack of analogous places of togetherness, liberal democracy will fall apart and fall prey to right-wing populist strategies. People need and democracy needs "living rooms of society", the barn where a choir sings, the revived senior citizens' meeting place in the community center, the youth center, the library with a café in a desolate city center.

Places where people come together without an occasion or program are home. That's why we are dedicating the new issue of taz FUTURZWEI to this cause and at the same time launching the "Living Room of Society" portal in the taz Kantine, Berlin, Friedrichstraße.

On this evening, people who have set up, are planning or know of a great living room for society will report on how it works, what it brings and also what the difficulties are.

With the choir Cantus Domus, with Idil Baydar (aka Jilet Ayse), the Green Party founder Lukas Beckmann, the actress Melika Foroutan, pupils from Beethoven-Gymnasium, Berlin, the artist Rebecca Raue, the architect Van Bo Le Mentzel, the actor Andreas Kern and many others.

According to social psychologist and taz FUTURZWEI editor Harald Welzer, people need a psychologically and socially safe place from which they can live their lives and dare to try something new. Liberal democracy must also create a sense of home, otherwise people will turn away. It needs "living rooms of society". The taz Kantine is one of these. Come on in!
