WOMEN IN JAZZ - Nubya Garcia (GB)

The 14th WOMEN IN JAZZ festival was held under the motto "Very British - Jazz from the UK". The festival presented British female musicians who embody a scene that is not only holding on to its traditions but is also young, diverse and increasingly multicultural. These artists are increasingly reaching a younger audience. Nubya Garcia was announced at the time with the band project NERIJA, but had to cancel her appearance for family reasons. Then as now, she is one of the central figures in London jazz.

Garcia was part of the TOMORROW WARRIORS support program, which was one of the nuclei of the development that later became known as the UK-JAZZ-EXPLOSION and changed the view of the British jazz scene forever. As with many of her companions, her work not only incorporates musical innovations, but also her family's Afro-Caribbean background.

Her saxophone playing is reminiscent of John Coltrane in places, but a closer listen reveals an artful blend of classic jazz, dub, hip-hop and R&B. Her latest album ODYSSEY, released in 2024, features guest artists including Esperanza Spalding. We are delighted to finally be able to welcome Nubya Garcia to Halle.
