We’re hearing more and more about rocky or gaseous exoplanets. Some of them are said to contain large amounts of water. In many cases, even the composition of their atmospheres is surprisingly well known. But how do we know all this?
This lecture explains the principles behind the observations that astronomers use to uncover the composition of these distant worlds. It becomes clear that we can draw conclusions about their properties from the way exoplanets affect the light from their host star.
