WORKSHOP: Ariel Freedman - when you practice 18.-19./20.07.2024

In the organizer's words:

when you practice

18-19.07.2024 (SOFT) // 18-20.07.2024 (INTENSIVE)

Suitable for all levels of experience, this practice is an appreciative yet playful collection of 'borrowings' from a number of Ariel's formative teachings and training lineages, all gathered under the big umbrella of cultivating generosity towards ourselves and others. The practices are simple and basic; they tone down the noise and intensity of everyday life to increase presence, awareness and precision of intention.

The inclusion of guided improvisation is influenced by nine years of practice and teaching in Gaga, but follows a more personal lineage of imagination into a state of rigorous and joyful work and places greater emphasis on opportunities to be present in a space with other people.

Material and elements of the creative process from a festival performance ("Figure No. 16" by Roy Assaf) and Ariel's own work will be presented.

Ariel Freedman

Ariel earned her BFA from The Juilliard School, where she received the Martha Hill Prize, and went on to dance in Mikhail Baryshnikov's company. From 2006-11 she was part of the Batsheva Company and Ensemble, where she received her training in Gaga as a practitioner and teacher. She has performed roles in works by Naharin, Sharon Eyal, Bobbi Smith, Ella Rothschild, Helen Simoneau, Zoe|Juniper and Aszure Barton and toured with Crystal Pite's Kidd Pivot. Her key artistic collaboration over the last ten years has been with Roy Assaf. In 2017, "Empress Archer," a duet co-created with Meredith Webster and produced by The Cambrians, premiered in Chicago; additional versions of the work were created for the 2023 Oldenburg Festival and for engagements in Portland, OR and San Francisco in 2024. With the creation of "Seven Minutes That Changed The World" and "A Little Less Than 300 Years From Now", she participated in the Suzanne Dellal Centre's 1|2|3 program for emerging choreographers in 2022.
