With over four decades of band history, the Yellowjackets are one of the defining voices of modern jazz - and with their new album Fasten Up (release date: February 21, 2025), their 27th release, they impressively demonstrate that their creative drive is unbroken. The title - borrowed from the energetic composition by bassist Dane Alderson - is emblematic of the dynamism and curiosity that has characterized the quartet since 1981.
The current line-up of pianist/keyboardist Russell Ferrante, drummer Will Kennedy, saxophonist Bob Mintzer and bassist Dane Alderson combines cross-generational experience with a constant spirit of exploration. Their style has always transcended genre boundaries - between jazz tradition, funk, chamber music elegance and modern influences - and has led the Yellowjackets to their very own cosmos of sound.
Fasten Up reflects this attitude in eleven versatile pieces: from fresh interpretations such as "Comin' Home Baby" to complex rhythmic concepts and lyrical ballads. Guest musician Raul Midón adds a special accent with his characteristic voice and guitar. The band shows once again how intense, playful and at the same time future-oriented their interplay is.
Even after more than 40 years, the Yellowjackets remain an ensemble that is constantly evolving - with a clear view of its own history and an even stronger urge to move forward.
