The pop-culturally defining country on the west coast of Africa is Nigeria; musicians such as Fela Kuti and Burna Boy started their careers from here. Some, such as Yemi Alade, even managed to become icons of the entire African continent.
It is not without reason that Alade, who was born in 1989, is referred to as "Mama Africa" - as evidenced by the fact that she was the only woman to open the Africa Cup of Nation 2024. On the one hand, this nickname is based on the great Miriam Makeba; on the other, it quotes the title of Yemi Alade's breakthrough album. Her song "Johnny", released in 2014 and until 2017 the most streamed YouTube music video by an African pop act in Anglophone Africa, was an incredible hit that is still played at every Afro party today .
Yemi Alade has always seen himself as a voice of different cultures and regions. Whether in Yoruba, Creole, Igbo and English, the most widely spoken languages in Nigeria, or in French and Swahili - she sets her messages to music multilingually: often about female emancipation and the establishment of new role models, during the Covid pandemic she promoted vaccination against the virus. A singer, a global star and a political pop icon: Yemi Alade will perform at Pop-Kultur with ten dancers and musicians.
