A family celebration becomes the starting point for a quiet but haunting tale about life in Taipei. The focus is on N.J., a middle-aged businessman whose life oscillates between professional obligations and personal memories. At the same time, we see his wife Min-Min, who is searching for stability after a family tragedy, and their two children, who are rediscovering the world in very different ways: Daughter Ting-Ting through her first experiences with love, little Yang-Yang with childlike curiosity and philosophical wonder. With great sensitivity, the film follows the small and big moments that shape life and interweaves the perspectives of three generations. Edward Yang does not tell his story in loud gestures, but in quiet observations, with scenes that are universally comprehensible.
Yi Yi is considered a masterpiece by Edward Yang (1947-2007), a central representative of the "Taiwanese New Wave". He was awarded the prize for best director at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000 for this multi-layered family drama. To this day, Yi Yi is celebrated for his balance of intimacy and narrative power and is considered both a timeless portrait of modern urbanity and a film about life itself, with all its tenderness, complexity and transience.
