Tel Aviv-raised, London-based keyboardist and producer Yoni Mayraz combines jazz with elements of '90s New York hip-hop, old-school breakbeats and Middle Eastern music to create dazzling new hybrids. You can already hear how well hip-hop production blends with the improvisational spirit of spiritual jazz music on his 2020 EP Rough Cuts.
After the two singles The Rat and Snow, which were supported by radio stations such as BBC 6, WorldWide FM and Jazz FM, his debut album Dybbuk Tse! has now been released.
Dybbuk, known from Jewish folklore, is a malevolent, wandering spirit that invades and takes possession of the body of a living person. The title "Dybbuk Tse!" is a command to remove the spirit from the possessed body.
The album is a story about possession, but also about exorcism through music. Recorded live with his band within a week, Dybbuk Tse! experiments with the dark side of things, but with Yoni's signature lightness. The album combines elements of jazz, hip-hop, acid jazz and Middle Eastern melodies with sophisticated textures and sounds, and features wonderful solos from some of the most promising talent on the scene.
