YOU\ME/ALIEN - A Space Opera

In the organizer's words:

YOU\ME/ALIEN is a social and artistic experiment in radical empathy, a theatrical exchange with the so-called "other" - not as a figure of fear or exclusion, but as a presence that can be reimagined. While the genre "space opera" usually describes large-scale science fiction epics, Opera Lab Berlin reinterprets it as a poetic and musical journey into the fragile and deeply political spaces between people and the way they encounter each other.
On this journey, a 10-piece international ensemble interweaves experimental vocal techniques and choreography with the instrumental timbres of strings, wind instruments, percussion and electronics. Music and text are not fixed compositions, but evolving languages - permeable, changeable, collective. An otherworldly sound theater emerges, inviting the audience to immerse themselves and posing urgent questions: How do we hear each other across divides? How does language connect and divide us? And how can art create conditions in which empathy replaces division?

Since its foundation in 2013, Opera Lab Berlin has realized over 30 independent productions with more than 40 contemporary composers and 18 directors. With YOU\ME/ALIEN, the collective continues its mission to expand the possibilities of contemporary music theater and open up spaces for exchange between different realities of life.
