In the organizer's words:
Time of ignorance, time of love
The German song originated in Vienna, in Hamburg, in Leipzig - and lives today in Hong Kong, in China and everywhere else where people wear it with seriousness and curiosity. This concert tells the story.
The program moves between departure and stillness, between the familiar, which eludes us, and the foreign, which gradually becomes our own. What it means to have no home in Schumann's woods and still sing there - that is the silent question posed by this evening. 🌙
The tenor Jan Petryka, who trained in Vienna and is firmly rooted in the Austrian concert scene, brings the song home, as it were - together with two musicians from Asia who have brought it with them from another world. Petryka completed his studies in "Lied and Oratorio" at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with distinction and is known from the Salzburg Festival to the Oxford Lieder Festival as one of the most distinguished lieder singers of his generation - Bachtrack described his tenor as "perfectly focused and guided, bright and crystal clear." 🎤
Xiaohui Li grew up in China and obtained her artistic diploma at the Hamburg Conservatory - in the heart of the city where the German Lied has had a special home since Brahms and Groth. Xinmin Wanbao praised her as a soprano with "remarkable precision and artistic sovereignty." Hong Kong-born KaJeng Wong is one of the most sought-after pianists in Asia - Martha Argerich called him "a special pianist", Claude Frank the most talented musician of his generation. As a soloist, he performs two impromptus by Schubert, pieces in which language falls silent and sound alone tells the story. 🎹
Three performers, three stories of origin, a joint program - and an evening that shows that great music is not created where you grew up, but where you arrive.
