The Theater Dortmund has a tradition of over 100 years and offers a broad, very diverse program for all ages and tastes. With its 6 divisions and approximately 80 new productions per year, Theater Dortmund is one of the largest and most productive houses in all of Europe. The six divisions are the ballet, the opera, the philharmonic, the drama, the children's and youth theater (KJT) and the academy for theater and digitality.

With its more than 800 employees, Theater Dortmund devises and rehearses the majority of its performances in Dortmund. The costumes, masks and props are created in-house and handcrafted.

The performances take place at several venues, the largest stages being the opera house with almost 1,200 seats, the playhouse offers space for about 500 spectators and the children's and youth theater has about 150 seats. The Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra plays its own concerts in the Konzerthaus Dortmund, but provides musical accompaniment to the opera and ballet productions from the orchestra pit in the opera house.

With bold formats such as the Nordstadtoper, ballet performances at Bodelschwingh Castle or in the Reinoldikirche, the Tiny Music House in schoolyards of Dortmund's elementary schools, the Ape(lina) from the Schauspiel in various places in the city, or the recently established Feierabend-Markt on the opera forecourt, the Theater Dortmund shows itself to be open, mobile, and accessible. A very special mix of tradition, contemporary art and innovation.
