Am Kanal

In the location's words:

Many cyclists already use the path along the Dortmund-Ems Canal as a leisure and tourist route. However, the canal promenade is very narrow in some sections, and in many places the path is made up of gravel and grit or there are potholes and puddles. Now it is to be made more attractive as an everyday cycle route for commuting professionals or students by widening it to 3 to 4 meters and asphalting it. This will make it possible to create a continuous and attractive cycle route from city border to city border along a 27-kilometre stretch.

Joint project
The City of Münster and the Federal Waterways and Shipping Directorate have agreed on such an extension. The city of Münster is responsible for the construction, while the federal government is providing the majority of the funding for this major project.

Construction in sections
The Waterways and Shipping Office's service route will be constructed in six sections so that cyclists and pedestrians can use it comfortably. The construction work was completed in September 2023. The expansion of the section close to the city center between the lock and the bypass will only take place when the canal itself is widened there.
