In the location's words:

Due to its small size of two hectares, the Botanic Garden's outdoor area did not offer any development opportunities for a representative stock of trees and shrubs. In 1934, as part of the plans for a campus university that had been under consideration since the 1920s, a separate arboretum was established in Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Straße on the new university campus. This is a good three kilometers away from the historic greenhouse and open-air area in Münterstraße. The garden section was extended in the 1960s and in 1972.

Today, a 3.5-kilometer network of paths allows visitors to explore many of the trees and shrubs. The trees and shrubs are planted according to their region of origin. The areas for the major regions of North and East Asia, Europe and North America display over 1,600 species of trees and shrubs. Special quarters present horticultural cultivated and cultivated forms as well as native forest communities.
