Young and old, big and small, families with children, hikers and cyclists meet at the Bürgerseen lakes near Kirchheim unter Teck. The Bürgerseen lakes consist of three lakes, the "Untere See", "Mittlere See" and "Oberer See", and form the local recreation area.

Swimming at the Bürgerseen lakes

The "Untere See" offers bathing opportunities with specially created islands and barbecue areas. Ideal for a vacation at home in the summer months.

The "Upper Lake" with its shore areas is considered a biotope with species-rich shore plants. Small reeds, hedgehog bulrushes and marsh irises are just as much a part of it as reeds and marsh plants.

History of the Bürgerseen lakes

The Kirchheim Bürgerseen recreational area is very popular, and not just since today. Over 100 years ago, the master cooper Georg Mayer asked the local council to give him the land through which the Talbach stream flows in order to lease the fish ponds and set up a fish farm. The fish ponds themselves are much older. They are mentioned in municipal court records in 1721. They could certainly be linked to the Herrenhäusle and the manorial hunting parties, but without proof. The lakes were not only used for fish farming; when they were frozen over in winter, the townspeople enjoyed ice skating. In the summer, people went out on boats. Swimming was not allowed in the past. Since 1956, the "Verein der Bürgerseefreunde e.V." has looked after the lake landscape. In an exemplary manner, they maintain the balance between nature conservation on the one hand and local recreation for many people on the other.
