Bürgerzentrum Waldschänke Hellerau

More than 100 years have passed since Karl Schmidt founded the Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau and laid the foundation stone for the garden city. Hellerau is now part of Dresden and yet it is so very different. Not baroque, but like a place from another time. A "village" that is a listed building. The historic Waldschänke, the founding site of the garden city of Hellerau and home to important artists of the European avant-garde, such as Franz Kafka, Gerhart Hauptmann, Oskar Kokoschka and others, forms the sophisticated backdrop to the Hellerau Citizens' Center. Under the leadership of the Förderverein Waldschänke Hellerau e.V., the Waldschänke was saved from decay and could be rebuilt with the help of many volunteers and funding. Even during the reconstruction period, but even more so since its inauguration as a community center in 2013, it has once again become a place for art, culture, communication and encounters.
