Café Rot

Robert-Koch-Str. 26 44143 Dortmund Navigation >

In the location's words:

Café Rot - where you can feel like at home.

"Make yourself at home" - how can you be welcomed more beautifully in a café?! Selvi and Ali, the operators of Café Rot in the Kaiserviertel, want to be there for everyone. And you can see that. If, for example, children sometimes scream or make nonsense, then that is part of it. After all, their own children are often in the store, too. This creates a very open and warm atmosphere, very relaxed and inviting.

If you want, you can sit at the tables outside and enjoy a bit of the vibe of the neighborhood. Inside, it's very modern, open and cozy - perfect also for studying or for a chat among friends in rainy weather. There's a long table at the counter for family brunch. Everything from breakfast to lunch to after-work beers is offered. You can also chill out in the backyard - just like at home.

The places where Selvi and Ali have already lived are as colorful as the participants - captured on the photo wall, which is definitely worth a look. For example, the two were at home in a hotel in Istanbul before coming to Dortmund in 2016. In February 2020, they signed the lease for their café and opened in October, only to close again after just one month - lockdown. Now the two have been open again since May 2021.

It really is a family business: Ali and Selvi serve guests while their mother bakes cakes, for example. And so "Grandma's cheesecake" is not just a phrase, but rather the program. All the cakes are homemade, many gluten-free and at least half vegan. We were particularly taken with the vegan avocado cake with fresh blueberries - an absolute dream! They also bake their own bread.

If a product does not come from their own production, then however usually at least from the region. For example, the milk comes from the Waltrop dairy farmer "Billmann" and the ice cream from Hitzefrei - also one of our favorite places.

And Café Rot also takes responsibility away from the food: For example, guests can buy a voucher, clip it to a clothesline outside, and someone who is not so flush with cash because of the pandemic or in general can take it without much notice and redeem it in the store - and Ali and Selvi will then buy another hot drink to go with the cake or a soup to go with the salad. "We want to put a smile on people's faces. It's the little things that make us happy," says Selvi about the campaign.

In short: Café Rot is a super nice store in the Kaiserviertel with a nice and relaxed atmosphere - really an enrichment!
