A special culture developed in the 19th century in the seaports on the German North Sea coast. From the small coastal towns, skippers not only traveled the local coasts, but the whole world. From there, they brought back impressions, experiences and souvenirs.

The German Seaport Museum in Carolinensiel shows the everyday life on board with the dangers to which the skippers were exposed, but also the opportunities to get to know the world. The living culture of the captains' families with their sense of status and maritime lifestyle is brought to life. Many interactive and multimedia offers are available.
