Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe GmbH (FAIR GmbH)

The GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung in Darmstadt operates one of the world's leading particle accelerator facilities for research.

Around 1,520 people are employed at GSI. In addition, around 1,000 scientists from universities and other research laboratories around the world come to use the facility for experiments every year.

GSI is a limited liability company (GmbH). The shareholders are the federal government (90 percent), the federal state of Hesse (eight percent), the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate and the Free State of Thuringia (one percent each). They are represented on the Supervisory Board by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the respective state ministries. GSI is a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organization.
