Fête de la Musique 2026 in Leipzig: Free music throughout the city on June 21

On June 21, 2026—the longest day of the year—Leipzig will once again become a stage. Fête de la Musique transforms the entire city into one big concert hall, with music playing everywhere: on streets and squares, in parks and gardens, in cafés, clubs, bars, and beer gardens. Free admission is available to everyone, whether you’re a big music fan or just a curious passerby. And the best part about 2026: The Fête falls on a Sunday, so you’ll have the whole day to just go with the flow.

 

What is the Fête de la Musique all about?

The idea is wonderfully simple. Since 1982, when the then-French Minister of Culture Jack Lang launched the Fête de la Musique in Paris, the same principle has applied everywhere: all musicians, whether professional or amateur, are welcome to participate, and all concerts are free and open to everyone. Over the years, what started with a few power outlets and a lot of musical idealism has become a global phenomenon. Today, the Fête is celebrated simultaneously in over 600 cities worldwide, including about 50 in Germany. And Leipzig is, of course, one of them.

What makes the Fête so special: You don’t need a big plan. You simply go out, listen, move on, discover something new, and let the city carry you through the day. It’s precisely this laid-back celebration of a musical way of life that makes June 21 in Leipzig one of the most beautiful days of the year.

 

The Fête de la Musique in Leipzig: A History Full of Joy

In Leipzig, the Fête was launched in 2012 by a group of music-loving Francophiles from the German-French Society in Leipzig, the Institut français, the Moritzbastei, and WERK2. It has grown steadily ever since. In 2023, there was a very special premiere: the City Partnership Stage in the middle of Burgplatz, which celebrated the numerous city partnerships and Franco-German friendship through music with international concerts from Brno, Kraków, Kyiv, Lyon, and Hanover, as well as an ARTE karaoke event. With more than 40 venues and around 90 concerts, this year marked a new record for participation in the history of the Leipzig Fête.

 

What Kind of Music to Expect

At the Fête de la Musique, anything goes. Rock, jazz, choir, folk, classical, electronic, rap, and much more. Amateur musicians of all genres are especially encouraged to let their passion for music shine and find their audience throughout the city. But professionals, orchestras, bands, ensembles, and soloists also perform on this day without pay, so that music remains freely accessible to everyone. It is precisely this mix of big names and dedicated amateur musicians that gives the Fête its unmistakable charm.

 

Venues and Program in Leipzig

The concerts are spread throughout the city, from the downtown area to Clara Zetkin Park and into the gardens, parks, museums, clubs, and cafés of the various neighborhoods. On the terrace of the Schaubühne Lindenfels, for example, the Hot Staff Brass Band will play its danceable BrassPop starting around 3:30 p.m., and the Institut français Leipzig will host a summery program starting at 2:00 p.m. Music will be played at many other venues throughout the day, often continuing well into the evening hours.

The Fête de la Musique in Leipzig is organized by the Institut français Leipzig and the German-French Society in Leipzig in collaboration with WERK2. The festival is supported by the City of Leipzig and Sparkasse Leipzig, as well as through a media partnership with culturtraeger and rausgegangen.
