With the opening of the Museum für Gegenwart in the Hamburger Bahnhof in November 1996, the Nationalgalerie was given an additional permanent exhibition venue for contemporary art. It is shown on an exhibition area of around 13,000 square meters. Historic parts of the building with extraordinary room heights, modern extensions with geometrically clear floor plans and luminous ceilings offer ideal conditions for the presentation of modern art. The holdings are made up of exhibits from the National Museums in Berlin and works from the Berlin private collection of Erich Marx. In addition, highlights from the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection have been shown in special exhibitions since September 2004. The Marx Collection is based on works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Anselm Kiefer and Joseph Beuys. The holdings also include over 450 drawings by Beuys and almost 60 works by Warhol. Groups of works by painters of the Italian Transavanguardia and representatives of Minimal Art are also on display. The English artist Richard Long with his "Berlin Circle" seeks a direct reference to the location in his works. The artists Gerhard Merz and Dan Flavin were also inspired by the building. The entire ground floor in the western Ehrenhoff wing is dedicated to works by Beuys. A conscious decision was made to avoid a historically defined presentation of the works and to opt for an open, cross-collection concept that includes all media used by artists.
