Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart

With the opening of the Museum für Gegenwart in the Hamburger Bahnhof in November 1996, the Nationalgalerie also gained a permanent exhibition venue for contemporary art. It is shown on an exhibition area of around 13,000 square meters. Historic parts of the building with extraordinary room heights, modern annexes with geometrically clear floor plans and luminous ceilings offer ideal conditions for the presentation of modern art. The holdings consist of exhibits from the National Museums in Berlin and works from the Berlin private collection of Erich Marx. In addition, highlights of the Friedrich Christian Flick Collection have been shown in special exhibitions since September 2004. The Marx Collection is based on works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Anselm Kiefer and Joseph Beuys. In addition, the holdings include over 450 drawings by Beuys and nearly 60 sheets by Warhol. Also on display are groups of works by painters of the Italian Transavanguardia and representatives of Minimal Art. The English artist Richard Long with his "Berlin Circle" seeks in the works the direct reference to the place. Likewise, the artists Gerhard Merz and Dan Flavin were inspired by the house. The entire ground floor in the western Ehrenhoff wing is dedicated to works by Beuys. A conscious decision was made to forego a historically defined presentation of the works in favor of an open, cross-collection concept that includes all media used by artists.
