Based on the initiatives of the Förderverein Industriemuseum Chemnitz e. V., the Chemnitz city parliament decided to found an industrial museum on August 28, 1991 - a date that is considered the official start of the Chemnitz Industrial Museum, although the idea was born as early as 1827. With continuous impetus and vision, Chemnitz residents from various professional groups worked to bring a trade and industrial museum to life, so that today the Industrial Museum can be described as a true joint effort of the city.

Compared to other museums with a long tradition, the Chemnitz Industrial Museum is a younger institution. It has had to assert itself in the midst of many new cultural and leisure activities and is now one of the most visited museums in the region. The recipe for success lies in the special historical framework conditions, the clear objectives and the ongoing commitment of Chemnitz entrepreneurs, politicians and citizens as well as a creative and dedicated team of employees.
