Monbijou Theater
In the location's words:
The Monbijou Theater is a self-managed open-air community theater in the heart of Berlin—and one of the last bastions of subculture, of the raw, imperfect, and authentic. No glossy facade, just a process. No finished product, just a living, breathing experience. Across from the Bode Museum, overlooking Museum Island, theater has been taking shape here for over twenty years—free from institutional structures and supported by a nonprofit association. It’s a place that stands its ground—in a city where spaces for alternative art are increasingly disappearing.
In the summer, classics ranging from Shakespeare to Molière are performed in the open-air amphitheater; in the winter, classic fairy tales are staged in the “fairy-tale huts.” But the Monbijou Theater is more than just its plays. It brings theater to the stage that reflects its own way of working: direct, physical, intimate. The boundary between stage and audience remains permeable. The performances take place among the people—with them, against them, for them. Questions are asked, provocations are made, experiments are conducted—and everything is allowed to be visible.
The theater also encompasses the space around it: in the summer, the grounds open up toward the Spree. A beach bar, a dance floor, an open-air gathering place. Sit under palm trees, gaze at the water, listen to music, dance. Tango, salsa, and more—almost every evening when the weather is nice!
