Oldenburg's Schlossplatz through the ages

Over the past hundred years or so, the Schlossplatz has been redesigned time and again. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71, Grand Duke Peter II had a small park laid out on what is now the open square. As early as the 1930s, the people of Oldenburg celebrated large city festivals such as the Kramermarkt here. Fortunately, its temporary use as a parking lot during the 1950s was soon abandoned.

With its large portico and four Doric columns, the castle guardhouse is reminiscent of an ancient temple and is one of the most striking neoclassical buildings that are so typical of Oldenburg. It has remained virtually unchanged since its construction in 1839 - only its function has changed. After the withdrawal of the Oldenburg military, it initially served as a police station, then housed the municipal building authority and has been used by the Landessparkasse zu Oldenburg since the early 1950s.
