The Phoenix West site is a symbol of Dortmund's flourishing metal industry. The disused blast furnace bears witness to the region's former dominance as a producer of pig iron.

A few meters away, the old gasometer of the former blast furnace plant dominates the skyline of the south of Dortmund. The huge, 76.5 meter high cylinder with a capacity of 120,000 cubic meters is still unused.
