Schauspiel Leipzig sees itself as a municipal theater for the city of Leipzig. Aesthetic diversity, concise directorial handwriting, content-related debates and numerous accompanying offers characterize the style of the house. Since 2013, artistic director Enrico Lübbe and his team have been implementing their concept of a progressive city theater - in line with the diversity and range of interests that can be experienced in Leipzig on a daily basis.

In addition to an extensive repertoire, around 25 new productions are staged each season in four venues and other locations.

The main stage is characterized by strong directorial handwriting and classical texts from Euripides to Jelinek. The Diskothek is dedicated exclusively to contemporary drama. Works by young authors are premiered here and are sustainably promoted, while contemporary drama texts are also reenacted and thus supplemented with new perspectives. With the residency in the former Bauwollspinnerei, Schauspiel Leipzig closes a significant gap between the working methods and aesthetics of the independent scene, international festivals and the municipal theater business. Artists from Germany and Europe work on their projects in the residency during production stays lasting several weeks. For the performance blocks, the residency is transformed into a theater that shows brand new performance art. The latest venue at Schauspiel Leipzig is Foyer 1, which will open in 2022 and will offer a variety of spaces in terms of size, seating and performance - from scenic projects to readings, from discussions to parties.

Schauspiel Leipzig is a pioneer in the field of inclusion: for 10 years, there has been a performance with live audio description especially for blind and visually impaired people at least once a month. Performances with sign language and English surtitles are also offered. Participatory and educational theater formats and clubs as well as the long-term urban performance "Pay attention!" open up the theater to urban society.
