Since 1922, the Municipal Museum has been housed in the building complex of the only completely preserved Renaissance castle complex on the Lower Rhine. In addition to the magnificent Renaissance façade, the ramparts and bastions also refer to the character of a generously laid out defensive complex.

The collections focus on Renaissance and Baroque art and craftsmanship, the history of the castle's construction and use and the history of Mönchengladbach as a textile town. The history of industrial and textile technology is made accessible in a separate and specially presented collection stand in the so-called "Textiltechnikum" in the Monforts Quartier.
