Stadthausgalerie Münster

Since its reopening in summer 2023, the Stadthausgalerie - located on Platz des Westfälischen Friedens - has been used once or twice a year by the Kunsthalle Münster. In view of Münster's self-image as a city of sculpture projects, the Stadthausgalerie will take the opportunity to focus on public space and questions of art and the public sphere in an exemplary manner, even beyond the major exhibition that takes place every ten years. The starting point for this is the collection of art in public spaces owned by the city of Münster.

Thanks to the Skulptur Projekte and the Public Collection, Münster has become an important reference point for a critical and reflective examination of questions of the public sphere and art in public space. More so than works in the protected space of a museum, works in public space shape the everyday life of the city's population, which is why they create identity in a special way, lead to very different discussions and raise questions. It is precisely these thoughts that become the starting point for the Stadthausgalerie's program. Current discourses on the use of public space, the qualities of public places as contested spaces, art in public space, but also the handling of the culture of remembrance and monuments are thus given a concrete location that enables critical debate and allows them to be questioned using artistic means.
