Our mission statement: Education for all!

Our continuing education offers are generally accessible through diversity of content, methods and organization, our presence in all Hamburg districts, the consideration of target group and minority interests and an appropriate price/performance ratio. We support the lifelong learning of individuals by focusing on the broad range of educational interests in different phases of life and contexts. We assume that the teaching and learning partners are equal in principle and regard the learning groups as places of social encounter in which tolerance, respect and understanding for different points of view are promoted.

Founded in 1919, we are the most traditional and best-known public further education institution for adult learning in the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Our founding motto: "Democracy needs education" is still a current aspiration and obligation for us. That is why our educational programs are aimed at personality and skills development and thus at the active and self-determined participation of people in cultural, political and social life as an indispensable prerequisite for a democratic society.

Our offering is geared towards both demand and our publicly mandated educational mission, which is committed to the sustainability of democratic development. As a publicly funded institution, we are aware of our special social, cultural and labor market policy responsibility. Our work is inextricably linked to changing social conditions.

The opportunities we offer for further education, both in the area of imparting knowledge and strategies for acquiring knowledge and increasingly in the area of imparting orientation and design skills, are becoming ever more important - while at the same time the availability of information is constantly increasing.

We are a recognized, trustworthy and competent partner for teaching basic democratic values and skills related to different life situations and work together with all those who are interested in future-oriented educational policy development.
