VISIODROM IN THE WUPPERTAL GAS BOILER
360° goosebumps - where industrial history becomes an experience space
In the middle of Wuppertal-Heckinghausen stands a listed industrial monument that is now home to Europe's largest 360° screen: the Visiodrom in the Wuppertal gas boiler. What once stored gas now holds images, sounds and stories - and turns a visit into a journey into a fully immersive space rather than a classic museum tour.
Immerse yourself instead of looking at it
In the Visiodrom, you don't enter a picture hanging on the wall - you become part of it. Projections surround the guests 360 degrees, the sound fills the entire cauldron and modern media technology combines the two to create an experience that you absorb with all your senses. Where words and texts end, the effect of light, music and movement takes over - content reaches the guests directly, emotionally and immediately.
Science meets art
What makes the Visiodrom special in the German immersive art scene is that each 360° show is complemented by a specially curated exhibition that explores the topic in scientific depth. This creates a dual experience of emotional visual power and in-depth background knowledge - a concept that is unparalleled in Germany.
Currently on show: ORIGINS - The beauty of life
From May 14, 2026, the immersive show and exhibition ORIGINS - The Beauty of Life will take visitors on a journey through 13.8 billion years of evolutionary history. In 20 artistically visualized chapters, the 360° show takes visitors from the Big Bang to the formation of stars and planets to the first biological cell. The Wuppertal adaptation and the overall concept come from the creative team of the Visiodrom under the curatorial direction of Christian Höher; the underlying show is a production of Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig under the artistic direction of Markos R. Kay.
The soundtrack is a Wuppertal specialty: the musical spectrum ranges from Bach to Bowie - complemented by original compositions by Wuppertal musician Mathias Haus.
On the first floor, a scientifically based accompanying exhibition, created in cooperation with the world-leading ORIGINS Cluster of Excellence in Munich, provides answers to the big questions of our existence: What is life? Are we alone? How do we travel to the stars? A breathtaking visualization of the colonization of a galaxy - created by 2023 Oscar nominee Frank Petzold - makes tangible what has so far only existed in the minds of scientists and visionaries. The program is complemented by the VR experience FIRST LIFE by Alchemy Immersive with Sir David Attenborough, which takes you 3.5 billion years into the past.
For the curious of all ages
ORIGINS is also explicitly aimed at the youngest citizens of the world. Together with the Junior Uni Wuppertal as an educational partner, interactive stations have been created at which complex scientific relationships can be experienced in a playful way - a WOW experience for all age groups.
