The Votivkino Wien is one of the oldest and most beautiful arthouse cinemas in the city and is simply a piece of home for many Viennese. It has been located on Ringstrasse in the 9th district, directly opposite the Votivkirche, since 1912 and has witnessed countless film stories since then.

What makes the Votivkino special is its attitude: not a mainstream multiplex, but curated cinema with high standards. Arthouse, international film art, retrospectives, documentaries and revivals of classics are on the program here. The house thinks of film as a cultural experience, not as a pure entertainment product, and thus attracts an audience for whom this is precisely what is important.

The two auditoriums are charming and have that unmistakable old cinema character that is hard to find elsewhere. High ceilings, a sense of history and an atmosphere that makes you want to see a movie even before you see the first picture.

The Votivkino is also particularly well-known for its original version screenings, i.e. films in the original language with subtitles, which is not a matter of course in Vienna. If you like cinema and haven't been here yet, you've missed something.
