Theater Waidspeicher is a professional ensemble puppet theater. It was founded in 1979 as the puppet theater division of the former Städtische Bühnen Erfurt. Since 1993 it has been run as Theater Waidspeicher e.V. in a non-profit form and currently has 27 permanent employees.

Since 1986, the theater has had an extraordinarily attractive venue in the Waidspeicher in the heart of Erfurt's old town, which can accommodate 142 visitors. More than 25,000 spectators attend one of the 300 or so performances every year, and the high standard of the productions is unanimously praised. Behind this success is an ensemble whose artistic core consists of seven puppeteers and actors. Most of the puppets, stage sets and costumes are designed and built in the in-house studio, while qualified stage technicians ensure the right lighting and sound. In addition, experienced staff in the areas of administration and public relations guarantee that the day-to-day running of the theater runs smoothly.

The repertoire of Theater Waidspeicher e.V. includes material from all eras and various genres, ranging from fairy tales and literary classics to contemporary dramas and adaptations of current children's and youth books. The majority of performances are aimed at children and young people, but the evening program for adult audiences is also very popular. Numerous national and international guest performances are proof of the positive audience response. Tours have taken the ensemble through Europe, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Taiwan, Israel, Turkey and Russia. The artistic achievements of Theater Waidspeicher have been recognized with numerous festival prizes and in 1996 with the special prize for children's culture from the Stiftung Kulturförderung.

Sibylle Tröster has been the director since 2009.

The theater is a member of the German Stage Association, UNIMA and the German Forum for Puppet Theater and Puppetry.
