The inn on Peacock Island

Peacock Island is located in the south-west of Berlin, in the tranquil district of Wannsee and very close to the venerable old royal seat of Potsdam. The almost 70-hectare area of the well-kept landscape park is a popular excursion destination and has been a World Heritage Site since 1990. It has been a nature reserve since the mid-1920s due to its extraordinary flora and fauna.

Under Frederick William II, the idyllic island came to life and became a tourist attraction that has survived all wars and crises virtually unscathed due to its remoteness. The small white castle is clearly visible from the Potsdamer Ufer and is said to be reminiscent of a "ruined Roman country house". Alongside it, architectural gems in a wide variety of styles make the island something very special. These include the Meierei, which looks like an old monastery, and the Neue Wache, designed by the famous Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the form of a Romanesque castle gate.

"To every animal its own little place."

Queen Luise used the island for her summer sojourns. In the style of the "Jardin des Plantes" in Paris, a wide variety of exotic animals were kept on the island at the time: Llamas, reindeer, monkeys, lions and kangaroos, brown bears and a wide variety of bird species. Most of the animals were handed over to the newly founded Berlin Zoological Society in 1842. They formed the basis of the Zoological Garden, which was the first German zoo to open in 1844. However, the peacocks, which live freely on the island and whose calls can be heard far across the water, are still characteristic and give the zoo its name.

In the inner courtyard of the U-shaped building complex, the small trees of the rustic beer garden provide cooling shade.

Inside, the rustic, elegant flair of the dining room creates a cozy atmosphere. Especially when the fire crackles in the large fireplace. The large hall, which is used for weddings and other celebrations, also has a fireplace. You can make your own smoke in the cozy, stylish smokers' lounge. Best enjoyed with a good glass of whiskey.

Whether indoors or outdoors, the kitchen will spoil you with the best home cooking, which is by no means boring due to the quality of its selected ingredients. The cakes and tarts are made in-house and are a temptation worth indulging in.
