The Agentur für Aufbruch sees the structural change in the Central German mining region not only as a logical and necessary path to the future, but also as one that involves leaving many things behind. We are interested: What are the perspectives of the people in the affected regions on this new departure? What are their wishes and hopes, what opportunities do they have to help shape the future? What are we losing along the way, and what memories are important to us for the future?

To find answers to these questions, the AfA relies on encounters and discussions with people in the region, on the knowledge of local neighborhoods and on the exchange between urban and rural areas.

When it comes to evaluating, archiving and presenting the results to the public, we combine methods from both artistic and scientific research. The results of our work are presented in exhibitions, film screenings and other artistic formats, but are also communicated and discussed further in workshops, discussions and publications. We temporarily create new spaces for encounters and exchange in urban and rural areas for the various mediation formats.

The AfA is a joint project of the Institute for Structural Change and Sustainability at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and Werkleitz.
