rediscovering music ... discovering new music - chiffren. Forum for Contemporary Music was founded in 2003 as a student initiative at the Institute of Musicology at Kiel University and has been a registered association since 2006.

We have been promoting and communicating contemporary music in Schleswig-Holstein for over 20 years. Our work includes the organization or support of concerts, the promotion of young talent in music practice and research as well as the development and maintenance of a database on contemporary composers in or from Schleswig-Holstein.

With SINNE | SINN - Concert Series & Symposium - we focus on a different aspect of contemporary music each year in order to make new sounds tangible and to deepen the dialog about contemporary music.

MIKRO | TONAL

The fourth edition of the artistic-scientific symposium and concert series SINNE | SINN will take place in Kiel from October 10 to 12, 2025. Under the title MIKRO | TONAL, this year's focus is on microtonality and special tuning systems as a challenge to experiencing and understanding contemporary music.

Six concerts present the fascinating diversity of contemporary music beyond the usual tonal scales, opening up different microtonal sound worlds and new auditory perspectives. In addition to important works from the microtonal cosmos, the focus will be on compositions from Schleswig-Holstein.

What actually is microtonality - and what makes it so fascinating? How and why did composers compose with microtonal sounds in the past and what appeals to them today about working with these fine intermediate tones? These and many other exciting questions about microtonality and special tuning systems in contemporary music will be explored by scientists, musicians and composers from various perspectives in twelve public lectures, talks and workshops.
