Cirque Bouffon was founded by Fréderic Zipperlin and Anja Krips. After the first few years with variety acts, the first big Bouffon show followed in 2005/2006. For this reason, the 15th anniversary was to take place in 2020, which unfortunately had to be canceled due to corona. Now Cirque Bouffon is actually celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2025.

As a former member of the world-famous Cirque du Soleil, Frédéric Zipperlin and his company Cirque Bouffon create a new kind of artistic theater with the philosophy of French Nouveau Cirque. With elements of circus artistry, comedy, music, theater and dance, he creates a unique aesthetic synthesis of the arts. "Bouffon" is originally a term from the Middle Ages. It describes the fool who sits at the foot of the king and is allowed to say anything without losing his head. The jester was, so to speak, the mouthpiece of the people.

In today's French usage, a "bouffon" is someone who is a bit special, a bit crazy.

In German-speaking countries, the idea of what constitutes a European artistic circus is still largely unknown. The trends of Nouveau Cirque combine the origins of French circus philosophy with a contemporary visual realization.

Nouveau Cirque, which has developed into its current form over the last fifteen years, emerged in France in the 1980s and has subsequently gained worldwide recognition for its unique pioneering role and outstanding artistic quality. Cirque Bouffon takes up this philosophy and dares to break with conventional circus aesthetics, creating its own distinctive genre: not a series of circus acts, but dramaturgically crafted performances that give the audience the feeling of experiencing the world of the Bouffon intimately and honestly. Under the musical direction of composer Sergej Sweschinski, the influences of Nouveau Cirque, the philosophy of Cirque Bouffon and the stylistics of contemporary music combine to create an aesthetic synthesis of the arts that makes the audience marvel, laugh and, above all, dream.
