Art. History. Identity.
Dachau's galleries and museums are the cultural showcase of a region with a rich past and a vibrant present. In the heart of the historic old town, two outstanding institutions - the District Museum and the Picture Gallery - present a multifaceted offering that impressively combines art, history and regional identity.
Dachau District Museum
In the former Kastenamt, the history of the Dachau region unfolds on over 1,000 square meters of exhibition space. With lovingly curated exhibits on folklore, everyday culture and crafts, the museum offers an authentic insight into people's lives from the 18th century to the modern day. Special highlights are the original Dachau traditional costumes, historical furniture ensembles and a fully furnished farmhouse parlor.
Dachau Picture Gallery
The picture gallery documents the heyday of the Dachau artists' colony, which achieved international significance around 1900. Works by Christian Morgenstern, Carl Spitzweg, Adolf Hölzel and many others show the artistic exploration of the Dachauer Moos landscape and make the gallery a place of inspiration and discovery.
