With the public film series "HEIMSPIEL", the Academy of Media Arts Cologne has since 2003 regularly invited its graduates back to the university to present their first feature-length films after their studies at the KHM. Each time after the screening, there are extensive audience discussions about the making and reception of the films, moderated (as far as possible) by professors who accompanied the graduates during their studies at the KHM.
The discussion with KHM graduate Anna Hepp about her first feature-length film "800 times lonely - a day with the filmmaker Edgar Reitz" will be led by Prof. Ulrike Franke and Solveig Klaßen, lecturers for documentary film at the KHM. This will be a very special evening for the KHM, because Edgar Reitz, now 90 years old and one of the most important directors of German auteur film, was actively involved in the conception of the KHM in the late 1980s as a member of the founding advisory board.
The film evening with graduate Daniela Abke and her debut film "Belleville, belle et rebelle" about the Parisian district of the same name, the past of the workers' and immigrants' quarter and its chansons will be moderated by Prof. Matthias Müller, who has been teaching Experimental Film at the KHM since 2003.
Alejandro Bachmann, substitute professor for film history and theory, will present the first feature film by the three KHM graduates Mareike Wegener (director and screenplay), Hannes Lang (production) and Thom Kubli (music) "Echo" at the end of the film series in the summer semester. The black comedy is the feature film debut of Mareike Wegener, who until now has been known primarily for her artistic documentaries.
The HEIMSPIEL-SPEZIAL shows advertising films by graduates of the KHM. Advertising film direction is a field of activity that is not directly associated with an art academy in the public eye. However, quite a few KHM graduates work with their own companies or freelance as directors, image designers or producers of advertising films. Lars Büchel, professor for feature film (long and short form) since 2010, will talk with Michael Binz, Fabian Epe, Isa Prahl, Bazon Rosengarth, Jens Schillmöller about the peculiarities of directing commercials and the commercial film industry, and promises an evening with "lots of entertainment and controversial discussions."
