Berlin: metropolis of film festivals

Over 50 film festivals and film weeks are held in Berlin every year. They show thousands of films from all over the world and attract thousands of visitors to cinemas and other venues. The spectrum ranges from genre festivals to country festivals and themed festivals.

The special expertise and independence of the individual festivals stands for the strength of Berlin's film festival culture. In contrast to the regular cinema programs, the festivals offer a cross-section of international filmmaking that is sensationally diverse and unique.

FESTIWELT: Commitment to film culture and to Berlin

FESTIWELT's mission is to strengthen Berlin's film festivals synergistically through exchange, to consolidate and expand Berlin's status as a unique international film festival metropolis, and to win over Berliners as guests and fans of the festivals.

Festival exchange

FESTIWELT offers Berlin's film festivals an exclusive exchange on all festival-related matters. From festival organization and funding issues to technical and accounting matters. Mutual enrichment takes place at members' meetings and personal encounters: The monthly regulars' table - request a date here - is open to all questions.

Cultural policy

Support the Berlin film festivals! It is FESTIWELT's aim to take up Berlin's image as a culturally diverse and vibrant city and to maintain and further expand Berlin's status as a creative capital and film metropolis. FESTIWELT bundles the interests of its members and communicates them to Berlin's cultural policy. Our aim is to strengthen Berlin's festival culture and promote it through lobbying. The richness and diversity of Berlin's film and cinema landscape is threatened by many factors and must be defended together.

Broad impact

FESTIWELT reinforces the perception of Berlin's internationality by presenting national and international film culture in Berlin through its own events such as Berlinale parties or the Long Night of Film Festivals. The festival calendar Filmfestival Guide Berlin, published in 2011 and distributed by Tip magazine, was aimed at the Berlin public in order to make it easier for film lovers, film experts and film festivals to find each other.

The origins of FESTIWELT

In 2009, the Homebase Lounge invited festival professionals to exchange ideas as part of its monthly filmmaker get-together. The common interface of festival organization inspired collective commitment, because: "Together we are FILM!". After just one more meeting in August 2009, public invitations were issued for the "Day of Berlin Film Festivals", Berlinale parties were organized, etc. ... . Kino-Zeit.de rightly ran the headline at the beginning of 2011: "Berlin is not just the Berlinale"!

Two years later, on June 18, 2011, the time had come and FESTIWELT e.V. was founded.

The members of the association work on a voluntary basis.
