The five-bay building ensemble of the Flottmann-Hallen in Herne, which still exists today, was originally the administrative building of the mechanical engineering company of the same name. Built in 1908 in the Art Nouveau style, the factory site extended over several hectares and produced hammer drills for the mining industry. With the departure of many large industries from the Ruhr area, the city of Herne bought the site, which was converted into a leisure and cultural facility in 1986. In addition to two event halls and a large foyer, which can also be used for concerts, four to five exhibitions of contemporary art are held each year in the 500 m² Kunsthalle.
