Since its founding in 1985, the festival has addressed current and historical, socio-political and cultural issues in equal measure. The question of the responsibility of the global North with regard to (post)-colonial contexts, the restitution of cultural goods as well as increasing urbanization and its consequences have been central aspects of recent years. Global social asymmetries inevitably remain recurring themes.

With the #JUNCTIONS and the digitalization of the 2021 festival, the Freiburg Film Forum opened up a new format in the main programme of the film week and thus expanded the circle of the audience beyond the analogue space to Nairobi and Karachi. The basic idea behind #JUNCTIONS is the simultaneous screening of films at different locations and the subsequent connection of the audience for a joint transcultural exchange. Curated with the respective local groups. What could not be realized in this form in 2021 due to the pandemic became the highlight of the 2023 festival. In addition to Freiburg, the #JUNCTION_locations were Nairobi, Kenya for a second time and Ahmedabad in India for the first time.

The film forum has set itself the task of illuminating a differentiated picture of the reality of people's lives in different contexts. With the help of digitalization, the festival gains diversity and variety in the selection of programmes and enables the transnational networking of new audiences. In 2015, the STUDENTS PLATFORM was created as a separate format for young, committed cinema. Students from a wide range of universities use the festival as an opportunity for excursions and film-related exchanges.

In twenty editions of the film forum to date, around 800 films from 90 different countries on all continents have been shown and discussed with the audience.
