The Human Rights Film Festival Berlin was founded in 2018 by Jan Sebastian Friedrich-Rust, Managing Director of the humanitarian and development organization Action Against Hunger. Today, it is considered one of the most important human rights film festivals in Germany with international appeal. The HRFFB shows films from all over the world that tell of human rights violations and the resistance against them in an impressive way. With a comprehensive accompanying program, the festival also offers a unique platform for exchange and networking between NGOs, filmmakers, activists, politicians and the public. Prominent human rights activists, politicians and artists such as Ai Weiwei, Nadia Murad, Filippo Grandi, Loujain al-Hathloul, Gesine Schwan, Enissa Amani and Can Dündar have taken on the patronage of the festival in recent years.
The HRFFB 2026 will take place from April 10 to 18 and is organized by Action Against Hunger. This year's main partner is Greenpeace. Other civil society supporters include Reporters Without Borders and SOS Humanity. The Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation is donating the Willy Brandt Documentary Film Prize.
This year's festival is financially supported by Deutsche Postcode Lotterie, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
