The International Summer Festival takes place every year in August for three weeks at Kampnagel and at selected locations in Hamburg. Since it was founded in the mid-1980s, it has been one of the major European festivals for contemporary performative arts from all over the world. The artistic director of the festival since 2013 has been András Siebold, whose program places a special focus on the interweaving of pop culture and avant-garde and the expansion of genre boundaries. Works by artists who deal with contemporary issues and speak radical aesthetic languages are shown. A key feature of the festival is the high proportion of world premieres and co-productions, which are realized with a worldwide network of partners. In recent years, the Kampnagel International Summer Festival has become a globally acclaimed venue for the latest productions of contemporary dance pieces. Internationally renowned groups and artists develop works at Kampnagel that represent the future of contemporary dance and can then be seen on major stages around the world. Each year, the festival presents and produces around 60 different works from the fields of dance, theater, performance, music, visual arts, theory and film, most recently attracting around 50,000 visitors.
