Since 2004, the Munich Chamber Opera has stood for sophisticated musical theater of a special kind. With its versions of well-known works and rarities of opera literature, it has established a firm place for itself in Munich's cultural life.
In over 20 opera productions, the chamber opera has staged works by Rossini, Mozart and Salieri as well as its own creations by Dominik Wilgenbus, such as the pasticcio "Kaspar Hauser" with music by Schubert. The operetta "Charley's Aunt", which premiered in 2014 and has already had more than 60 performances in German-speaking countries, is also one of the chamber opera's outstanding repertoire pieces.
The imaginative productions are characterized by their audience-oriented directorial and stage concepts as well as the unusual musical arrangements. The exceptional vocal and dramatic quality of the young singers takes center stage, making the Munich opera ensemble a forum for the promotion of young talent.
After Nabil Shehata, who was musical director of the Munich Chamber Opera from 2011 to 2018, Johanna Soller shaped the special sound of the ensemble from 2019 to 2022. Henri Bonamy was in charge of several productions from 2023 to 2024 and will continue as a guest conductor. Since spring 2024, we have been looking forward to working with Aris Alexander Blettenberg as our new chief conductor.
In addition to major stage works, concert evenings and composer portraits by Rossini, Haydn, Mozart and Schubert, among others, are regularly presented with the participation of well-known artistic personalities such as Luise Kinseher, Michaela May, Christine Ostermayer, Brigitte Hobmeier, Thomas Loibl, Gerd Anthoff, August Zirner, Friedrich von Thun and Lisa Wagner. Musical highlights also include concert projects with singers such as Juliane Banse, Waltraud Meier, Robert Gambill, Günther Groissböck, Daniel Behle and Okka von der Damerau.
