Klassik in Spandau was founded over 25 years ago. Initially, the events took place in an intimate circle, but quickly developed into a prestigious series with increasing numbers of visitors. Today, Klassik in Spandau is known beyond the borders of Spandau and Berlin for its high-quality concerts.

The founding board complemented each other perfectly: Prof. Andreas Waldraff's business acumen and his excellent contacts in the business world opened many doors and ears and secured a financial basis. The contacts in the district and Michael Virchow's knowledge of the district administration were the basis for gaining a lasting foothold in the district. With unique musical intuition, the artistic advisory board at the time, consisting of Prof. Marek Bobéth, Jens-A. Bode and Jens Hofereiter, developed appealing concert programs.

In the course of time, initial skepticism was also dispelled. The unique premises at the Zitadelle Spandau, which we are able to use, the very personal atmosphere and the very individual support of the artists gradually ensured that the concert series became increasingly well-known.

Among many others, we have had the pleasure of welcoming the following to KiS: Klaus-Florian Vogt, Christian Tetzlaff, Coco Schumann, Lisa Bassenge, Mona & Rica Bard, Matthias Eisenberg, Haiou Zhang, La Scala Women's Choir, Per Arne Glorvigen, Calmus Ensemble Leipzig, Ragna Schirmer, Spark - Die klassische Band, STEGREIF.orchester, vision string quartet, King's Singers, Jochen Kowalski and Gerhild Romberger.

Of course, there have also been serious setbacks in recent years. The painful loss of Marek Bobeth as Head of the Artistic Advisory Board in 2012 was offset by the expertise of his successor Jens-A. Bose was able to compensate for this. Following the death of Prof. Andreas Waldraff in March 2019, KiS was on the brink of collapse. Thanks to supportive commitments from politics and business, Matthias Lehmann took over as his successor. Founding member Michael Virchow also stepped down from the board and handed over his commitment to Christof Strobl. Many supporters have accompanied Klassik in Spandau over the years, including Gerhard Hanke, Helmut Kleebank, the Kubatz couple, Gabriele Fliegel and Jens Schmidt-Olufsen.

One particular challenge was the coronavirus pandemic, which led to a significant drop in sales. Thanks to the great commitment of the organizers, the support from politics and business, but also from the audience, these challenges could also be overcome and so we look forward to the next quarter century of Klassik in Spandau.
