In 1990, the Kuratorium Haus des Buches e. V. Leipzig was founded as a non-profit association to act as a committed promoter of book and reading culture in Leipzig in accordance with its statutes. To date, it has supported a large number of projects relating to books, literature and language as well as 15 associations, many of which are based in the house and in return are obliged to participate in the event program with their own ideas and contributions.

Since March 1996, the Board of Trustees has operated the event and exhibition center in the Haus des Buches, which was built by the Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels e. V. (German Publishers and Booksellers Association). Every year, more than ten thousand guests visit the public events and exhibitions.

The Literaturhaus Leipzig was launched in July 2005. Supported by the Kuratorium Haus des Buches e. V. as the supporting association, the institution has joined the network of literature houses in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The Literaturhaus Leipzig was the first member from the new federal states; it found its home in the Haus des Buches. The diverse program of events, which has attracted more than 250,000 visitors since its opening, is now being continued under new auspices. In June 2019, the supporting association was renamed Literaturhaus Leipzig e. V.
