ORBIT is the Cologne festival for contemporary music theater of the independent scene. As a dynamic platform for experimental and interdisciplinary art forms, ORBIT helps to raise the profile of a genre that uniquely combines current trends in the independent scene such as collective work, the dismantling of hierarchies and cooperation instead of demarcation.

Initiators Christina C. Messner (composer, musician) and Sandra Reitmayer (theater director) laid the foundation at the end of 2017. After countless discussions with artists and patrons and immense encouragement from the scene, they realized their vision of a festival with SPARK 2022 and its successor ORBIT 2024 that springs directly from the heart of that very scene.

Over four days in April, the biennial festival will present a wide variety of formats and forms of play at different locations and in different parts of Cologne in order to make multi-sensory art experiences accessible to a diverse audience. Symposia, workshops, speakers' corners and open spaces will also provide space for what is burning under the nails, for statements, discourse and question marks.

ORBIT celebrates a genre of art that thrives on looking beyond one's own nose: it tests how to deal with one's own boundaries and hardenings, to question entrenched listening and viewing habits, to open up to the unfamiliar and at the same time to focus on current issues such as ecological crises, social inequalities or democratic challenges. Multisensory. Collective. Inclusive. Diverse. Cooperative.

The ORBIT - Aktuelles Musiktheater Köln e.V. association has been the sponsor and organizer since 2025.
