Welcome to the Schumanns' home!
With its permanent exhibition, the Schumann House is home to the first museum dedicated to a pair of musicians. By means of audio features, sound-acoustic installations and multimedia collages as well as some original objects, such as the imprint of Clara Schumann's hand, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the Schumanns' time in Leipzig. Clara and Robert Schumann spent their happy first four years of marriage in the house at Inselstraße 18, built by Friedrich August Scheidel in 1838 in the neoclassical style.
On Clara's 21st birthday, the newlyweds moved into their first home together in an up-and-coming new district that was becoming the center of the book trade.

The artist couple regularly welcomed famous personalities such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Franz Liszt and Hector Berlioz to the Beletage. It was here that Robert Schumann composed some of his most important works, such as Liebesfrühling op. 37 together with Clara, the Spring Symphony op. 38 and his Piano Quintet op. 44, which his wife premiered at the Gewandhaus.

In 1999, the Rahn Dittrich Group bought the house and began restoring it in accordance with conservation guidelines. Together with the "Clara Schumann" Free Primary School and the Schumann-Verein Leipzig e.V., a unique symbiosis of museum, event venue and educational institution was created.
