The Simultanhalle is an art association in Cologne and was founded in 1983 as a project space. The continuous and autonomous exhibition programme is organized by a board of trustees. About the Simultanhalle

In 1979, the architect duo Busmann + Haberer erected a cubic model building on the outskirts of Cologne in a remote schoolyard. The building was originally only intended to serve as an architectural model for the new Museum Ludwig, one of the most important museums in Germany, which houses the extensive art collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig. The purpose of the test building was to test the lighting, wall and floor coverings as well as the practicability of the planned shed roof construction, which later became a striking feature of the final museum building in Cologne's city center.

After completion of the construction project in 1983, the temporary building was to be demolished. However, the artist Eva Janošková, who had moved into a studio on the studio site at the time, organized exhibitions with friends and studio colleagues in the Simultanhalle and managed to acquire funding from the city's Department of Culture a year later, which enabled an ongoing exhibition practice to develop.

Affectionately referred to as "Simultan-Halle" in internal documents of the city of Cologne, this descriptive term quickly became the official name - both for the model building and for the idea of a freely available exhibition space with a museum-like character.

From 1989 onwards, a board of trustees, consisting of a changing collection of actors from the Cologne art scene, took over the organization of exhibitions with local and international artists in the hall. Since then, the project space has been a constant and relevant companion in the promotion of art practice in the region and also serves as a platform for international events.

Since 2018, the Simultanhalle has been closed until further notice due to structural concerns. Since then, exhibitions and performances have been taking place outside and in the immediate vicinity under the name SimultanProjekte.

The Simultanhalle has been on the Red List of endangered buildings of the German Association for Art History since 2021. In 2022, Master's students at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences / Peter Behrens School of Arts, Department of Architecture, developed ecological approaches to preserving the Simultanhalle. The Förderverein Simultanhalle e. V. is also actively committed to the preservation of the building and is in contact with municipal stakeholders to this end.
