The STRANGER THAN FICTION documentary film festival is celebrating its 26th edition this year at the Filmhaus Köln and simultaneously in other NRW cities. From January 26 - February 4, the festival will screen 11 international documentaries and 6 from NRW that have not yet been shown in cinemas. The directors of some of the films shown are expected to take part in a subsequent discussion.

In the opening film SQUARING THE CIRCLE - THE STORY OF HIPGNOSIS, Anton Corbijn tells the story of the legendary design studio Hipgnosis, which created the most famous album covers of all time for bands such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney. THE MOTHER OF ALL LIES is a real festival hit in the program. The documentary, which deals with the Moroccan trauma of the bread riots in which numerous people were shot dead in Casblanca in the 1980s, has won audience awards at DOKLeipzig, the Kassel DOKfest and internationally in Cannes, among others. The two documentaries GRASSHOPPER REPUBLIC and FAUNA are celebrating their German premieres at Stranger Than Fiction. While the first deals with the phenomenon of grasshopper harvesting in Uganda, the second shows the unusual neighborly relationship between a traditional shepherd and a high-tech laboratory for animal experiments in Barcelona.

There will also be many events with guests this year. The directors of THE POWER OF UTOPIA - LIVING WITH LE CORBUSIER IN CHANDIGARH will tell us about the planned Indian capital of the legendary architect Le Corbusier in the cinema. In THE EQUIPMENT OF THE WORLD, the directors show us the hidden world of film props. Andrei Sannikov, the protagonist of THIS KIND OF HOPE, a Belarusian activist and former top diplomat will be a guest in Cologne and Düsseldorf to talk about the Belarusians' hope for freedom.

With ICH MÖCH ZO FOOß NAH KÖLLE JONN and the SHORT FILM PROGRAM, we also have films by local filmmakers in our program, who we also have the pleasure of welcoming as guests at Filmhaus Köln.

We are looking forward to presenting STRANGER THAN FICTION again this year and to welcoming many guests to Cologne and other NRW cities. Good films and good conversations are currently an important basis for dialog and the exchange of different opinions and perspectives and this is very valuable and worthwhile at the moment.
